Design Ideas for the Dining Room
Effective lighting in a Dining Room should have the capability of setting a relaxing, romantic mood, as well as a festive, holiday mood. The tabletop should be highlighted and dimmers should be incorporated into your lighting plan. TIP: Small low voltage lights on either side of the dining chandelier, lighting art work, collectibles, and niches, spectacular dining experience. For a real design statement, install a decorative ceiling medallion with your chandelier.

Dining room lighting should be both beautiful and functional. This requires a mix of general, task, and accent lighting that can set the mood for a number of functions, including a formal dinner, a family get-together, and other activities such as homework, hobbies, or family bookkeeping. Dimming controls will enable you to vary the light for each occasion.

Flaunt Your Fashion
Imagine … you've spent hours creating a mouth-watering, four-course meal - or at least a few minutes ordering the pizza. Now it's time for you and your guests to sit back and relish the results. Do you want a surgically lit atmosphere, or a soft, radiant glow?

Develop your own style - and remember that formal doesn't have to be uncomfortable.
Chandeliers add elegance
Regardless of style, a chandelier positioned over your dining table becomes a focal point for the whole room. Hang chandeliers 30 inches above the table to produce sparkle without glare.

Is the focal point of the dining room. Suspended over the dining table, it serves as a decorative style element that enhances the beauty of your fine furnishings. When the light is dimmed, a soft, glowing atmosphere similar to candlelight is created. If equipped with a downlight, the chandelier provides task lighting for the table and accent lighting for a centerpiece.

Make your chandelier really sparkle by aiming adjustable halogen recessed fixtures onto it. For crystal or glass chandeliers, use clear bulbs to enhance their shimmer.

Not a chandelier person? Pendants hung in pairs work well over a long dining table. The styles are vast and easy to install.
Recessed or Track Lighting
Provides general lighting, while enabling you to highlight prized possessions throughout the room. A ring of four recessed downlights around the dining table supplements the light from the chandelier, while providing accent lighting for your tableware. The pure white light of low-voltage fixtures with tungsten-halogen bulbs will make your crystal and silverware sparkle

Recessed downlights targeted straight onto the table reduce glare and provide additional illumination. For even lighting, place one downlight about 24 inches on either side of the chandelier.
A buffet or Sideboard
Can be flanked with wall sconces on either side. Choose fixtures that complement the style of your chandelier. Displayed objects can be accented with recessed downlights installed in the ceiling above.

Wall sconces visually expand a room, add to the décor, and augment lighting. Use sconces to complement recessed downlighting. Place them so that they appear aesthetically balanced in the room. Install sconces above eye-level so guests are not distracted by their glow.

If the sconce is opaque, use a frosted bulb. Consider companion sconces or wall brackets on either side of a china cabinet or hutch for dramatic effect.
A family portrait
Can be dramatically lighted with recessed adjustable accent fixtures. Ask the certified lighting consultants at your local ALA showroom to help you choose fixtures that are best suited for this purpose.

Use accent lights to highlight features such as artwork or architecture. Tuck recessed or undercabinet lights into bookcases or behind plants to add warmth and excitement to the room.
A China Cabinet, Breakfront, Hutch, or Wall Niche
Can become a showplace for your prized collectibles by installing strips of low-voltage mini-lights under the shelves.

Want to feature your best crystal in the china cabinet? Use a halogen bulb: the bright, white light will bring out its sparkle.
If you need additional lighting for a buffet, tall, narrow candlestick lamps offer portability and style.
Remember that you control the ambience, so keep your options open by installing dimmer switches. Pick a soft, warm glow for dinner and dial up more intensity when your table becomes a workspace - or when you're ready for lingering guests to leave!
